Hair Extensions 101
Have you dreamed of having the long beautiful locks you see on celebrities today? Does your hair take forever to grow? Well now there is another option, hair extensions! You may be wondering, what are hair extensions and how can I get them? Well you are about to find out!
Hair extensions are hairpieces that will be attached to either your natural hair or your scalp. They help improve the look, strength, and length of your hair. There are a wide array of types but the most known and used are strands (small clusters of 30 peices of hair), wefts (slightly larger peices of hair, merged at the top free at the ends), and braids/dreadlocks (which come pre-wound). The extensions themselves are either made of synthetic or real human hair. The natural is normally the best you can get because its easier to find a match to your own hair.
Hair extensions come in many different styles and can be pre-colored, pre-permed, or pre-highlighted with curls or waves. How long hair extensions lats depends on how they were put in. Sometimes they can last 6 to 8 weeks other times they can last up to 4 months. Rebonding is always needed periodically because even with extensions our natural hair still grows. The bonding agent used becomes loose the more our hair grows and you’ll need to get your extensionsre-adjusted to refresh your hairs appearance.
So with all the different choices that are out there, it’s easy to see that preparing for hair extensions is not an overnight decision. You first need to find the right type for your hair. Then when that is done you need to find a salon that specailizes in that particular kind of hair extension (search now for Dallas Hair Salons offering hair extensions). Plan a visit to your stylist and talk about what look you are hoping to acheive, how long it will take, color matching or any other questions you may have.
The day of your hair appointment, plan on spending hours in the salon. Take something to eat because this is a long process. You will need to shampoo your hair with a clarifying shampoo, do not use conmditioner! Your hair is its cleanest when its in its most natural state. This helps the extensions adhere to your natural hair. Extensions are either sewn, glued, or clipped in.
You shampoo your extentsions just like your regular hair. You will want to buy a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Reason being that it is easy for hair extensions to become dried out and brittle. The main difference between conditoning your natural hair and your extensions is you only need to run the conditioner through the ends, otherwise your extensions may begin to look greasy. Be sure to get tangles out with a comb. Using a brush on tangled extensions may cause them to rip out. Also comb tangles when hair is wet.
